Assessments & Testing
With the use of IQ tests, and tests of academic aptitude and achievement, we can identify strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes these tools are used to identify “gifted” students or employees, and sometimes they are used to identify specific learning disorders or developmental problems.
Psychological assessments can help gain understanding of a person’s mental state, the depth of mood problems, personality, and daily functioning. These are invaluable tools in setting therapy goals, designing treatment plans, or advocating for a client in need of further services or assistance.
Child therapy
Children can be surprisingly insightful, caring and practical. However, they have not reached a developmental level where they can express themselves as well as they would like to in words. Their understanding often plays out in their behaviors, and in their play.
This can be very confusing to caregivers, who often cannot see the reason for a child’s behaviors, and find their efforts to help a child very frustrating.
When a child has been traumatized, caregivers are sometimes unsure of how to help, and they worry about causing further harm.
Adult Therapy
Therapy begins with a psychological assessment. This is usually accomplished in the first session. In the assessment interview the psychologist and client will determine the nature of the problem at hand and what changes the client would like to achieve. The assessment results in a summary of goals to be accomplished, the best therapy methods to accomplish them and a projected time-line for treatment.
APP’s practitioners utilize a number of therapeutic strategies, usually beginning with proven Cognitive and Behavioural based therapy methods. Goal-oriented therapeutic approaches treat emotional and behavioural disorders, which are essentially unhelpful habitual behaviours that can be replaced by healthier ones with appropriate training. Such techniques are effective in creating significant changes in the least amount of time, as they integrate features of both behaviour modification and cognitive restructuring. Once faulty patterns are addressed, other methods will be more effective in addressing remaining mood, relational and behavioural problems.
Parenting skills
If you are struggling with parenting a child with ADHD, a learning disability, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Tourette’s, Asperger’s, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, or Attachment Disorder, or if your child simply needs directed attention, parenting can be difficult, thankless and a bit scary. APP offers individual coaching and training to help parents feel knowledgeable and confident in their role, and happy with their children.
Beginning with a thorough assessment of the family dynamics, an APP parent coach will work with parents to develop short and long-term goals. Together, parents and coach will carefully craft a comprehensive parenting plan. Live support is on-going through the telephone and internet support, as well as home-visits, as required while parents are practicing new techniques.
Group Sessions
Our therapeutic and educational groups are designed to support and empower.
Group work draws on each member’s knowledge and perspective, providing a more insightful understanding of the problems being solved. Groups are great for motivation: they force individuals to be responsible to others, which enhances self–reflection. Group work helps keep you on task. It’s harder to procrastinate when working with others. And, group work helps individuals to motivate each other to succeed.
APP groups are grounded in theory and research to ensure a rich experience for our clients. The APP team consistently creates groups that bring meaning and purpose to the participants that we work with it. A safe and comfortable environment is provided to ensure that every group member feels welcome to share stories and issues important to them.

For the challenge
“We can have a profound influence on each other. By letting others know that we want to hear what they have to say, and that we want to know what they are going through, we let them know that they are valued, and that their insights are worth sharing. When we add sensible, achievable ways to make the improvements they want, to attain the success they can imagine, we impact not only their future, but all those who they are empowered to influence. That is how we do our part: knowledgeable guidance builds confidence, which turns into strength and connectedness, and those are the keys to a world that is a beautiful and exciting place to be alive. Somehow, I find that very rewarding!” Jean Kwiatkowski, MA, MS, R.Psych.
